The Owners' Story
Incredible Edible Landscapes originally started as a solo project. As a 23 year old, I bought my first starter home in West Palm Beach, using money scraped together from a pizza delivery job and some would-be college funds that never got spent. The first thing I did upon moving in was fill the yard with stuff I could eat… Fruit trees, veggies, whatever I could get my hands on. I knew nothing, and through trial and (lots of) error, eventually I figured out what a Food Forest was, and how to get fruit trees to actually grow and thrive in my sandy yard. The key was learning which plants actually grew well in South Florida’s unique climate, and how they could be planted together in harmony while building healthy soil.
Fast forward a bit and the hobby started to become an obsession. I had to figure out a way to make it sustainable– enter the joy of plant propagation! I became captivated by the thrill of turning one plant into ten, then one hundred, and then… before I knew it, I was churning out plants like no tomorrow, and could barely walk through the yard without tripping over a potted fig tree or Brazilian spinach plant grown from cuttings. Soon enough, through being in the right place at the right time, I got connected to a new weekly farmers market just outside of downtown WPB. Still working Monday thru Friday at an office job, I tended to the plants in any spare time I had, and attended the weekly market each Saturday as their only edible plant vendor. The first few markets were a success, and the plant business was booming!
After a while, I started reducing my hours at the office job, and opened up my small backyard nursery (0.18 acres) to customers, by-appointment-only. This was a hit, and forced me to get more organized, and I started publishing a weekly updated plant catalog online. Somewhere around this time I met Iris, who was looking for plants for her own backyard garden, and ended up walking into my booth at the weekend market. She bought a papaya plant and somehow, we ended up married a few months later. You can ask her for all the intricate details. Oh, and around this time, the world was ending too…
Covid seemed to flip the world upside down, and all of a sudden everyone was interested in fruit trees, gardening, and self sufficiency. The demand for edible plants went through the roof, and so did inquiries for food forest design, consultation, and installation. This quickly sealed the deal: the office job was done away with, and with the help of my new wife, our family, and our first employees, Incredible Edible Landscapes took full form. After a short while it became apparent that we needed more space, and the pressure of running a budding plant nursery on a tiny lot in urban West Palm Beach was taking its toll. One day we took a drive and stumbled upon a FOR SALE BY OWNER sign at a run-down old palm tree farm in the Loxahatchee area, just a short drive west of the city.
By God’s providence, we found creative means to purchase the old farm, and by winter of 2021, we had keys in hand. The rest is history– we got to work cleaning up, overhauling, and eventually completely rebuilding the 2.5 acre farm, and it has begun to fit our vision of what the ideal edible plant nursery would look like. Every year our production has increased, the quality of our plants and service have gone up, and we’ve become more integrated with our local community. It wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing, dedicated team of individuals who love what they do!
As of the time of writing this (December 2024) we are still building our vision and have big plans for the future. Stay in touch and grow with us!
