Sapote

Sapote

(26 products)

Sapote is a word derived from the Aztec language, meaning “soft, sweet fruit”, and refers to a group of many different fruits which share similar characteristics.  “Sapote” is not a reference to any single specific fruit, although the Mamey Sapote is often referred to by the name Sapote, and is perhaps the most widely recognized member of this group.  Other tasty Sapote fruits are Canistel, Sapodilla, Ross Sapote, Black Sapote, White Sapote, Green Sapote, Abiu, Caimito, and many more.  Most of these are closely related members of the Sapotaceae family, but Black Sapote is more closely related to persimmon, and White Sapote is in the citrus family.

Regardless of the potential confusion caused by the name Sapote, these fruits share one thing in common– they are all rich, creamy, and very sweet!  With flavors ranging from pumpkin pie, to brown sugar, to caramel flan, to chocolate pudding, to vanilla pudding….. the world of Sapote fruits is one worthy of exploring, and the good news is that these all grow relatively easily in South Florida.  They all thrive in full sun and well drained soil, and are attractive evergreen trees.  Whether eaten ripe off the tree, made into pie, or blended into a milkshake, Sapote fruits are a rich, dessert-like treat that can’t be found in grocery stores.  Check out our selection of Sapote trees and see which one catches your eye!
