Winter is Black Sapote Season!

Winter is Black Sapote Season!

Conner Murphy |

Winter is Black Sapote season in Florida!  The fruit also known as “Chocolate Pudding Fruit” can be a bit underwhelming if you expect a rich chocolatey flavor from the fresh fruit– its flavor is sweet and creamy, but mild, almost like an avocado.  However, with a couple of simple ingredients you can make Black Sapote into a decadent chocolate pudding or mousse that truly lives up to its name!

Our Super Simple Super Delicious Black Sapote Chocolate Pudding Recipe

  • 1 ripe Black Sapote, flesh scooped into a bowl

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon cacao powder

  • 2-3 oz heavy whipping cream

Put all the ingredients together and mix with a whisk, or in a food processor.

Ingredients can be adjusted to taste.

Garnish with a sprig of mint and enjoy!

Black Sapote is also amazing when used in baked goods.  Black Sapote bread, muffins, etc.  If you have a special Black Sapote recipe, we’d love to try it!

Grafted Black Sapote trees (3 varieties) are available at the nursery.
