Society Garlic - Tulbaghia violacea
Are you a garlic lover, but don’t want to put in the extra work needed to grow true garlic in South Florida? Don’t worry, Society Garlic is your new best friend! This perennial herb is native to Southern Africa, and grows tremendously well in South Florida, thriving in our cooler winter temperatures as well as the warm, rainy summer months. While not a bulbing plant, but rather a green garlic (think chives), Society Garlic offers the same savory, spicy aroma and flavor as its bulbing cousins, and can be harvested any time of year! Its attractive, grassy foliage and clusters of small pinkish-purple flowers make it a fantastic addition to herb gardens, landscape borders, and even small spaces like patios, windowsills or container gardens.
Just like true garlic, Society Garlic offers several health benefits. It has mild antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities, supports healthy digestion, and is rich in antioxidants. The leaves can be used fresh or cooked, adding a mild garlic flavor to salads, soups, stir-fries, or sauces. The flowers are also edible and make a great garnish! Society Garlic thrives in full sun locations, but will tolerate partial shade. It is drought tolerant and prefers well-draining sandy soil. If you aren’t already growing it, consider adding a few Society Garlic plants to your garden or food forest! And if you are, let us know your favorite way to cook with it, so we can give them a try!
